THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA

Florence, summer 1953.

The story follows Margaret Johnson, a wealthy women from North Carolina, and her daughter Clara, who is developmentally disabled due to a childhood accident. 

They spend their summer vacation together in Italy. 

When Clara falls in love with a young Florentine man who doesn’t seem to notice nor care about Clara’s illness, Margaret is forced reconsider not only Clara’s future, but also her own deep-seated hopes and regrets. 

 

The award-winning musical which combines classical and contemporary musical elements was written by Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas and is based on the 1960 novella by Elizabeth Spencer.
